Galavale House (Galashiels)

What we do:
Galavale House is home to residents of both sexes who can no longer cope in their own homes or other supported accommodation.
Area covered:
Borders-wide
About our services:
The unit has accommodation for 16 residents and 1 respite bed. It is currently split into 13 beds for care of long-term enduring mental illness and 3 beds for the care of functionally ill elderly MHET (Mental Health for the Elderly Team) residents.
Small teams of staff care for specific groups of residents. Each resident has an individualised care programme, which is devised by his or her named nurse from his or her staff team.
Most of the bedrooms are single rooms with en-suite bathrooms.
Philosophy of Care
The unique character of each person is acknowledged and respected, irrespective of age, sex, beliefs or culture. We make every effort to meet a range of needs, including emotional, physical, social, spiritual and cultural. We try to promote independence, enhance dignity, maintain privacy and confidentiality. We aim to help our residents to fulfil an acceptable life in a community setting and seek to keep the negative effects of institutional living to a minimum. The atmosphere of the house is a stimulating one in which relationships can grow and a culture of personal responsibility is encouraged.
The Team
Most of the staff are nurses who work together as a team. We also have help from medical, physiotherapy, chiropody, dental, music and occupational therapy professions. If you wish to contact the unit, please do not hesitate, as there is always a senior nurse on duty 24 hours a day.
How to access our services:
Referrals for Rehabilitation beds should be made to Dr Ian Pullen, Consultant, Rehabilitation Team or for Functionally Ill beds referrals should be made to Dr Paul Morris, Consultant, MHET Team.
