What is a Day Hospital?
It is called a Day Hospital because you spend most of the daytime there for one or more days a week, but you sleep at home as usual. It does not have hospital beds nor is it used to perform day surgery.
A Day Hospital deals mainly with older adults who have some illness such as stroke, arthritis or other disabilities which can be helped by treatment.
The Day Hospital can help bridge the gap between hospital and community care. Treatment can be continued and monitored there allowing earlier discharge from hospital. It can also help to prevent your condition from becoming worse.
Your own doctor, district nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist or hospital consultant can arrange for you to attend the Day Hospital for care and/or therapy.
It is NOT the same as a Day Centre provided by your local authority where you would participate in mainly social activities, entertainment and recreation.
Staff
Doctors
The consultant in charge is based at the Borders General Hospital. They will visit the Day Hospital fortnightly. A local GP will work alongside them to look after the medical side of your health and will monitor your progress.
Nurses
A qualified nurse will be assigned to your care on admission. With you they will assess and plan the types of nursing actions to meet your needs, such as personal care, dressings and medication.
It is our policy for your nurse to visit you at home before your admission. This allows you and your family or carers to discuss any specific worries you may have about coming to the Day Hospital.
Physiotherapist
The Physiotherapy Team:
The physiotherapist will assess any mobility, balance or disability problems. If required, a program of treatment will be commenced in the Day Hospital or Physiotherapy department.
Speech and Language Therapist
A Speech and Language Therapist is available to help you, your relatives and carers if you have communication or swallowing difficulties. The speech therapist will assess any difficulties you have and provide a treatment programme if required.
Occupational Therapist
An Occupational Therapist will be based part time within the Day Hospital. She will provide individual assessments and select various activities working with you to improve your abilities and independence, e.g. with dressing, bathing, cooking, getting in and out of bed.
Social Worker
Although there will not be a Social Worker based at the Day Hospital there is regular contact with the Social Work Department. If you or your carer require advice on the wide range of community care services available please ask a member of staff or alternatively contact the Duty Social Worker on 01361 883050 Monday-Friday 9am-12noon.
Podiatrist
A Podiatrist (chiropodist) is available by appointment 5 days a week and home visits can be arranged by staff. They will provide a full range of foot care, and will advise you on the care of your feet and good footwear.
Dietician
A Dietician will be available by arrangement to give dietary advice.
REMEMBER Whilst you attend the Day Hospital you will remain in the care of your own doctor and district nurse. The Day Hospital team will work alongside them and keep in contact with everyone providing care for you at home to ensure the best possible program of care can be arranged for you.
