ENT (Otolargynology - including Audiology)

What we do:
Provide a comprehensive otolaryngology (ENT) service.

About our services:
A comprehensive otolaryngology (ENT) service is provided, with the exception of the surgical management of head and neck cancer, to the local population. It is accepted that this exception is inappropriately managed in district general hospitals and is directly referred to Edinburgh. In all other aspects of modern otolaryngology with, of course, the exception of the most scientifically based developments such as cochlear implantation, it is appropriate that the Borders General Hospital should provide a full service.
Audiology support is well established and staff have a particular interest in extending the range of diagnostic tests available. A proposal to establish "GP Direct Access to Hearing Aids" has recently been implemented.

Hearing Services

  • Wide range of diagnostic audiology tests
  • Rehabilitation programme for hearing aid users
  • Paediatric audiology
  • Tinnitus management (by request)
  • Insertion gain clinics (by request)
  • Dedicated clinics for education services
  • Direct access to Hearing Aid clinics

How to access our services:
GP's should refer new patients to a Consultant Otolaryngology Surgeon who will then refer the patient to the Audiology Department. Existing hearing aid users may contact the department directly.
Although appointments are not required for collection of new batteries, patients should contact the Department to ensure staff availability
