Pharmacists (Chemists)
Of all health professionals, pharmacists have the widest education and training in the use of medicines for the prevention and treatment of disease. Apart from dispensing and advising patients about their prescription and over the counter medications, healthy lifestyle advice also forms an important part of the role of the community pharmacist. Beyond this, community pharmacies are the first port of call for the treatment of minor ailments eg coughs, colds, hayfever etc without the need for an appointment. Also many pharmacies offer cholesterol testing, blood pressure testing and smoking cessation services. But this is just the tip of the iceberg — there are many other services that community pharmacy can offer. Ask your pharmacist what is available from your local pharmacy.
Within the primary healthcare team a community pharmacist is an important member, working in liaison with other healthcare professionals such as district nurses, GPs, dentists, opticians – and all members of your NHS healthcare team – to bring you complete and expert care.
