Macmillan Centre, Borders General Hospital

 Borders MacMillan Centre

What we do:
The new Macmillan Centre provides all cancer services, including palliative care, within a single unit, and integrates all cancer services in one location.

About our services:
We launched a major fundraising appeal to raise £1.2 million for the new cancer centre which is based at the Borders General Hospital in Melrose.
The new centre provides all cancer services, including palliative care, within a single unit, and integrates all cancer services in one location. This creates a better environment for patients to receive treatment and for staff to practice their skills.
The new centre provides state of the art cancer treatment and care facilities in an environment which is specially designed to aid relaxation and recuperation. It also enables patients and their families to access more information and advice, and provides counselling support.
The resource centre offers six day treatment couches for chemotherapy, a two-bedded treatment area, a separate treatment room, two consulting/examining rooms, two counselling rooms, an information resource room and accommodation for Macmillan doctors and nurses.

How to access our services:

Meeting the needs of local people

  • At present 700 new cases of cancer are diagnosed annually in the Borders. Over the last 10 years the number of patients has increased six-fold, putting extra pressure on the facilities available.
  • In addition to the new cases diagnosed, there are a further 500 patients living with cancer who still require treatment.
  • The new centre will stop the majority of patients having to travel to and from Edinburgh for treatment while at their most vulnerable, when they are often psychologically and physically unable to cope with the discomfort of travel.
  • Those who already receive treatment in the Borders will do so in a more suitable environment, enhancing the quality of care being given and received.
  • This is not only a clinical facility, it is also being used as a resource centre where all forms of cancer care can take place, including the use of complementary therapies where appropriate.
  • The vast majority of the 1,200 patients from the Borders each year will be seen in chemotherapy, haematology, breast and bone marrow out-patient clinics at Melrose without having to travel to Edinburgh.
